Johnnie Verneda Blackmon, 84, of Peoria passed away accepting God’s call at 10:49 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2015, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist. She was born on Oct. 31, 1930, in Augusta, AR., to the late Eddie and Elmer (Evans) Dean. Verneda married her soulmate, Eddie Blackmon on Sept. 3, 1960. He survives. Verneda loved her family and friends. She was a very fashionable and proud woman. Verneda loved to the Lord and was a member of Zion Baptist Church for over 60 years. She worked at the Peoria Country Club and Mt. Hawley County Club for a number of years before retiring. Verneda loved to cook and bake, her special friend Joyce Davis would always say “she could bake a brick and make it taste good.” Verneda is survived by her husband, Eddie Blackmon; three children, Chaquawana Wyatt, William (Mary) Wyatt and Chat (Jessie) Leonard; one sister Marge (Jack) Sprawling; seven grandchildren, Jarod, Alysha, Marcelous, Carmen, Carla, Anthony and Derrick, a host of great- great- grandchildren and great-great- great- grandchildren. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends whom adored and will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Delao; great-grandson, Brandon Thomas and sister, Mildred Robinson. A home-going celebration will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Zion Baptist Church, with visitation commencing one hour prior at 10 a.m. Pastor Sam Duren will officiate. Verneda will be laid to rest in Swan Lake Memory Garden. Arrangements were made especially for Verneda's family and professionally directed by T.W. Parks Colonial Chapel.
