Mr. Broderick Spencer Sr.

Broderick (Ricky) Charles Spencer Sr. transitioned to Glory on January 6, 2023, at Unity Point Methodist, at the age of 65. He was born in Peoria, Illinois, on March 23, 1957. Ricky met June, the love of his life, in the 5th grade, and they shared 39 years of marriage. Ricky is survived by his loving wife, June Spencer, and his three children, Ricky Spencer, Jr. (Kiely-Fiance’), Jewel Dawson (Ahmad), and Tomeka Spencer. He is forever cherished and remembered by his nine grandchildren, Brandon, Alexus, Leah, Ahmani, Antonne Jr., Ahmad Jr., Morgan, Autumn, and Lauryn, and two great-grandchildren, Addison Johnson and Aspen Maxison. Siblings and their families; Belinda (Lynn) Spencer-Little, Walter Spencer, and Anthony Spencer. His memory lives on with his nieces, nephews, and a host of beloved family members and friends. His memory will also be treasured by those who were devoted to his early development, among them Aunt Cassadia Shelby, Tina Williams, Faye Page and Rev. Michael Williams. Ricky was predeceased by his mother, Bessie Spencer Woods, and his father and mother in love, James and Joella Burton. Ricky graduated from Peoria High School in 1976. From there, he went to William Penn College, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Science in 1982. Ricky began his career helping children at The Children’s Home from 1983 – 1986. In 1986 he continued his work with children as a Juvenile Probation Officer at Peoria County, where he retired with 34 years of service in 2020. Ricky leaves a powerful legacy of community outreach that influenced the lives of countless teens and young adults. He was a boys’ basketball coach at Peoria High School for 17 years, mentored teens at Carver Center, and volunteered in the Pekin Prison Outreach Program. Ricky was a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He faithfully served in various positions such as: past Kappa Pi Lambda Chapter President, past Area Director covering Peoria, Springfield, & Quad Cities, Grill Master at the Annual Peoria Alpha Family Picnic, and he recently served as an instructor assisting with the Go To High School Go To College Mentoring Program. Ricky loved God, adored his wife, June, and valued his family. While he loved football, he was a basketball enthusiast and embraced the art of the game. He lived out the famed words of Maya Angelou, who stated, "a friend may be waiting behind a stranger’s face." With this quality, Ricky truly knew no strangers. His passion for mentorship can be seen in the many lives that have been impacted by his vehement commitment. Ricky’s homegoing celebration will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023, at City of Refuge Cathedral of Worship, 2201 SW Adams St Peoria, IL 61602. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am – 10:30 am CT, the Omega Service will begin at 10:30 am CT, and the Homegoing Celebration will begin at 11:00am CT. Episcopal Vicar Ahmad Dawson Sr. will be the Eulogist. Interment will follow at Parkview Cemetery. Arrangements were made especially for the Spencer family and professionally directed by TW Parks Colonial Chapel.
